pants on fire

Why do people lie?  I don't mean occasional, dumb white lies.  I mean big ones.  Chronic lies.  The kind that you can't possibly reasonably expect to never get caught in.

They will catch up to you eventually.  At least some of them.  Enough of them that I know to regard the rest of what you say with suspicion.

It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that some of those lies hurt people.  Mutual friends of ours.  Sometimes where I'm being used as an alibi.  Sometimes where I'm pitted against someone.   Sometimes (actually, quite often) to the point where I'm forced to choose between two people.  And then the liar gets cut out of my life.  Because let's face it: I'm not naive; just very willing to give people the benefit of the doubt for a while or bestow forgiveness.

I still love those people and wish them well for the most part (well, most of them, but perhaps not all).  But it's really quite impossible to maintain close friendships with people like that.  For one thing, they're draining.  And for another, there's always consequences.  Their lives are constant train wrecks... and why?  Bad decisions.  When you lie that much, there's bound to be a few that come back and bite you on the ass.  The last thing I want is to be caught by a piece of shrapnel when your life explodes (again).

I'm not saying that I'm not guilty of busting out the popcorn when drama springs up... but I prefer my drama at a distance.  Like in random groups on Facebook.  And yeah, no friends group or family is completely devoid of disagreements or drama or whatever.  But generally it's silly things... like my cousin forgetting to keep it a secret that I snuck my bike into the trunk of mom's car.  Or fighting with my best friend over some obscure philosophical point, slamming the phone down, and then messaging him five minutes later on Facebook because something funny happened.  Normal shit.  Harmless shit.  Not shit that permanently affects people's lives.

I just don't understand those kinds of people.  I don't understand how other people keep those kinds of people closely in their lives.  And in some ways it's quite a shame because so many of these people were fun, charismatic friends whose company I enjoyed, who made periods of my life brighter until their shit caught up with them and it spilled over into my world.

Perhaps I could salvage these friendships if only any of them would come clean about their lies, to admit they had a problem.  But thus far, I can only think of one friend who's done so, at least partially.  I can't say we're particularly close friends, but at least they're still in my life.

OotD: Bleach

Just a pic spam post today.  Not much really happened.  Ran a few errands, went to dinner with the parents, and got coffee with friends.  Le boyfriend did buy two pairs of replacement sunglasses today.  Hopefully these last longer than his last pair!

If you have some time, give me some love on my Lookbook.  ;)

Coffee and Music

I'm awake.  Goddamnit.  I got maybe 5 hours of sleep last night and I don't know why.  Or maybe I should blame le boyfriend for not being all cuddly and warm in the bed since he lacks to blame my absence when he wakes up early.  Meh.

Fastforward a couple hours later after the internet distracts me...

Still feeling tired and half awake.  I've been avoiding coffee so far because I'm not too keen on it when I'm sick.  Although I did kind of binge on it last night at Waffle House.  But who can resist WaHo coffee?

It was nice having the gang together again, even if I did feel crummy and couldn't breathe.  There was a lot to catch up on in each others' lives.  A lot of crazy stuff that I unfortunately can't speak about here, but there were good things too.  And of course, enjoying everyone's company was the best part.

perf

Megan is awesome because she let me vent to her even though she needed to vent too.  Mutual venting is a good thing.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

And a bajillion hours later...

I feel like I'm lifting the veil on the writing process today.  Rarely do I post something around the time I actually began writing it.  I get distracted, lose interest, get hungry, or get writer's block.  But I am quite determined to finish this post in the day I started it at the very least.  The beginning would seem disingenuous if I didn't.

I definitely wanted to talk about some music today.  I'm really excited about 3 bands right now.  So for those of you that like darker music, whether shoegazey or industrial or dancey, this is for you!

Alex's (of Thou Shalt Not) newest endeavor, Seeming, is coming out with an album in less than 2 weeks!  As usual, Alex pairs epic vocals with dramatic yet infinitely danceable music while utilizing elements of industrial or classical sound to complement the ambiance on various tracks, all while maintaining thoughtful, intelligent lyrics.  It's beautiful in its variety and timelessness.

You should pre-order this album right now!!!  [link]

I already have my copy on order of course.  ;)  And speaking of new music, I just downloaded everything I could by Black City Lights.  Their song "Offering" was recently featured on Welcome to Nightvale's weather segment.  Normally, I could give or take most of the music they feature.  It's pleasant, but not really my normal taste.  But this just came out of left field and smacked me like a freight train.

Gorgeous shoegazey dark wave with touches of electronica, witch house, and dream pop.  I want to melt into the melancholy.  It's beautiful and perfect and immersive.

Listening to Black City Lights got le boyfriend thinking about another band we had discovered earlier this winter - Winter Severity Index.

A little less shoegazy and a bit more postpunk/gothy influence, Winter Severity Index hails from Italy which makes me love them all the more.  They've captured the sound of the late 80s/early 90s without feeling anachronistic.  They're more of a natural progression from the darkwave/postpunk bands of that era... well, at least the way I would have had things progress if I was in charge of the state of music during the 90s.  They only have an EP on their bandcamp right now but it is AMAZING.  I can't wait for more!

Bonus:  I friggin' love this song

OotD: Love in a Void

This might very well be one of my new favorite coordinates.  It makes me feel like a classy adult and a rockstar all at the same time.  Black on black with metal studs - it just doesn't get much better than that.  The only flaw is that I seem to have forgotten my dangly cross earrings when I took these photos.

Given the nearly monochromatic presentation, the accessories become huge focal points, bringing a touch of brightness with the ombre fade of the scarf and blinged out bag.  Both items are presents from my BFF.  You can find them and other Grace Adele brand accessories at her website: https://angelamarielee.graceadele.us

I'm wearing some of my standards of course - Lucky Brand leather jacket, Forever 21 skinny jeans, and my Strike Envy knock-off sunglasses.  The boots, however, are brand new.  I bought them to replace my favorite black boots which got a hole in them (thank a lot, dirty workplace that destroys all my shoes).  As sexy as these boots are, I'm still not wholly satisfied with them.  I feel like they're too plain and perhaps a little cheap.  They also run a bit big when I'm not wearing my heavy winter socks.  So it looks like I'll still be keeping my eyes out for replacement boots (and then these can become my new work boots).

The netted sweater is my greatest accident of the year.  I ordered Heavy Red's Savage World sweater but received this on accident.  (I'm actually still waiting for them to send me my Savage World sweater and a replacement for my defective Introspection of Love dress... c'mon, guys!  My tracking slip says you got my package on the 21st.  I'm getting a little nervous here!)  The sweater has a high front with a low back and slinks nicely off my shoulder due to the silkiness of the material.  I've been tossing it on over all kinds of shirts and dresses.  It's pretty awesome actually.

OotD: Baby put on heart-shaped sunglasses

  1. Sole Plot Short Boot, BKE, Buckle, in Boots
  2. Rainbow Feather Top, Forever 21, Forever 21, in Forever 21 Shirts
  3. Polka Dot Heart Sunglasses, Rue 21, in Polka Dot Eyewear
  4. Purple Feather Earrings, Vanity, in Jewelry

This was part of the crazy night at Megan's apartment.  The shot of the boots came later, once I was home, because I hadn't worn them to the mall that night.

I really love the watercolor look to the feathers on my shirt.  They remind me of the wallpaper in my childhood bedroom.  It was just random brushstrokes of color that looked like pile of pastel melted ice cream.  There's something oddly soothing about it.

OotD: We Were Born to Die

This was the summer of Lana Del Rey.

My boyfriend was still living in another state and the weather was cold, but Megan and I were already gearing up for a ridiculous summer.  We had just finished raiding the mall before returning to her apartment in what passes for a big city around here.  Later that year I would be interning as a fashion photographer for my friend's start-up jewelry/accessories company, with the Born to Die album more often than not blasting from my car stereo as I commuted to an actual big city for the photo-shoots.  It was the seminal album of that year.

I'm not sure why I had my camera on me that night.  Had this supposedly impromptu photo-shoot been our plan all along?  Perhaps.  I remember coffee and choco-wine and battling Jason with my sparkly $1 wand from Target.  In between the shenanigans we managed to take some photos for Lookbook.  This was probably one of the more sane coordinates of the night.

October in pictures

Halloween this year was both super fun and kind of disappointing.  I feel like we just didn't get to do as much as last year... and the boyfriend's new work schedule made it impossible to take him to any Saturday night events, which left me pretty bummed.  Oh, and did I mention getting sick just in time for the holiday?  Yeah, there was that too.

birthday girl

What little we did do was really fun though.  And I think my last minute costume turned out pretty spectacular (thanks to the super awesome birthday present from le boyfriend).

We also attended the wedding of one of my best friends from high school.  It's about damn time!  (I'm really happy for her! :3)

le boyfriend and I

3V forever. (that's the bride in the middle)

Probably one of my favorite events of the month was our trip to Conneaut's Ghost Lake, which is a series of haunted houses set up in the old theme park.  Last year had been really disappointing because the hotel (supposedly legit haunted) and the lake shore were all blocked off.  I think there had been a fire or something.  This year everything was back up and running (aside from one attraction) so it was once again spectacular.  I'm pretty sure our group was more obnoxious fun than any of the plethora of teenagers huddled in line with us.  And that was even before we stopped at the hotel bar halfway through.  Look, it was frickin' cold out!  And the bar was very warm...

It was seriously cold though.  Probably the coldest night so far this autumn.  I kept molesting le boyfriend for warmth.  Dave ended up buying a $5 women's winter set for himself and we kept trying to stick the hat on things because it was so ridiculous looking.  Jason had specifically worn one of his devilish Black Craft Cult shirts and insisted on exposing it whenever there was black light... while simultaneously dancing.  And then we saw the most epic collection of posters at the dart game in the midway.  It is best described by this song:

The guy at the booth was really cool though.  I took home the wolf poster.

My Current Loves

I want to take a moment to share with you some things I love and the endeavors of my lovely friends.

My dear, dear friend Megan over at Star Above Muted Worlds is now selling Kitsy Lane jewelry.  Ask her nicely and she might have some spare coupons left over.  You should go check out her website now while she has some sweet flash sales going on: https://anadelis.kitsylane.com/

Another friend of mine, David K., is having a sale on his Pop Art style paintings over on his Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/shop/davidkdecadentdesign

Use this code for 50% off: FACEBOOKAUGUST

And, of course, there is my own venture into direct sales.  I've recently become an independent consultant for Scentsy!

Creepy Crawly: the BEST warmer ever!

For those of you who've never heard of it, Scentsy is a system of scented wax and wax warmers, in addition to bath and body products, home goods, and plushies.  Actually, it's a lot more awesome and expansive than I can describe it, so just go take a look at my website and browse the catalog: click here

August is sale month so in addition to this being your last chance to buy summer items, products are 10% off.  But the super awesome Creepy Crawly warmer, and the rest of the Fall/Winter collection, won't be available until September 1st.

Aaaaand one last love because holy crap am I obsessed!  Welcome to Night Vale.

If you aren't listening to this yet, I'm just going to assume you've been living under a rock.  Welcome to Night Vale is the most popular podcast in the U.S.  It's a Lovecraftian tale created and produced by Commonplace Books.  It revolves around the affable radio show host Cecil, his crush (the ever perfect and beautiful scientist Carlos), and the often horrifying goings on in the dystopian desert town of Night Vale.

11 Reasons You Should be Listening to Welcome to Night Vale

America's Most Popular Podcast: What the internet did to "Welcome to Night Vale"

I agree with the last article's astute observation that tumblr helped Welcome to Night Vale catch it's big break... but I have to disagree with the fandom.  While Hannibal is a popular fandom, it's popularity and obsessive tendencies pale in comparison to the Homestuck fandom.  Judging by my own dashboard, I'd say it was the Homestuck people that catapulted it to fame.  :P

We ended up watching Rock of Ages after the we finished True Blood.  Jason hated it.  So much in fact that he drove to my apartment and put that sticky note on my back door.  I guess it wasn't punk rock enough for him.  Sorry, dude, the rest of us loved it.  You just don't get the genre.  :P

Zack & Kirsten's Wedding

One of my best friends got married this weekend to the most wonderful girl.  I can't imagine a more perfect couple (which is usually not something I say despite it being a popular rote response for others).  I'm really glad they found each other.

Field Trip

Last weekend we ventured forth to Pittsburgh for a little adventure.

Our first stop was the occult store where we picked up some candles.  There was a decorative piece that I really wanted for my bookshelf, but I decided against spending $60 and lugging around furniture all day.  They were playing Type O the whole time and the incense smelled really good so all in all I enjoyed my visit.

We were all feeling coffee withdrawals at this point so we took a break (after stopping at the CD store on the way).

We probably wasted more time there then we really needed too trying to figure out where to eat.  In the most awesome spur-of-the-moment decision ever, we decided to eat at Spice Island Tea House.  I haven't had Thai curry that good in years!

After that it was pretty much just the bookstore and the mall.  I searched desperately for a Covenant CD for le boyfriend since he couldn't come with us... but no one had anything at all by Covenant.  WTF?  Oh well, I still owe him a CD.
