OotD: Cosmic Love

I think I've found my new favorite piece of clothing!  The Galaxy Purple Swimsuit from Black Milk Clothing is absolute perfection.  I don't think I've ever had a onepiece bathing suit fit so perfectly.  And it actually covers my ass!

Seriously - if there's one thing I can't stand about bathing suits, it's when they cut across my ass in a funny place and make me look like I have 4 butt-cheeks.  I haaaaaaaate high-cut suits.  But this was PERFECT.  Next time I wear it I'll have to get some pics of the back.

Estel was determined to get in the picture, so I decided to troll him a little.

I actually started the day off with a pink and purple plaid shirt thrown over it, but the weather dropped as the day went on.  Plus, I like it better with the black crop hoodie anyway.

Here's what it looks like without anything covering it:

Some of you may have noticed that I've been wearing the La Lune Pendant pretty consistently lately.  I'm a little obsessed with it.  Granted, I love all the jewelry I got from Night Venus, but this piece has become like an extension of me.  It's been a while since I've had a connection to a piece of jewelry like this.  It's quite lovely.

It was a pretty great day as well.  We had some delicious vegan food from a local cafe for lunch.  My black bean and guacamole burger was soooooo good!  I wish I had gotten two.  We puttered around the house for a while after that... at least until it was time to meet our friends at IHOP.  That was the first time in a long time that we had gotten that many of us together all at once.  It was a blast!

Jeanette brought us some lovely souvenirs from her trip to Columbus.  I believe the one I chose was especially poignant given what's currently going on in my life.

We ended the night by all going to my other friends' house for coffee.  They were all watching a DVD of Frozen by the time we got there.  Of course, since their son had already seen it a bazillion consecutive times for the past couple days, it was really the adults who were invested in the movie.  I have to say I really enjoyed it.  And Olaf was a lot less annoying than I assumed he'd be given his character design.  I was bracing myself for a Jar-Jar Binks level of stupidity.  Thank god it did not deliver, haha.  But really, the movie was super cute.  I really liked the characters and loved the whole sisterly love theme.  I was a little disappointed by the other songs though.  They weren't quite on the level of "Let it go" but they were still nice.  And the animation was gorgeous!  I'd like to watch it again sometime without a hyper child trying to teach me ABCs.  :P

Coffee and Music

I'm awake.  Goddamnit.  I got maybe 5 hours of sleep last night and I don't know why.  Or maybe I should blame le boyfriend for not being all cuddly and warm in the bed since he lacks to blame my absence when he wakes up early.  Meh.

Fastforward a couple hours later after the internet distracts me...

Still feeling tired and half awake.  I've been avoiding coffee so far because I'm not too keen on it when I'm sick.  Although I did kind of binge on it last night at Waffle House.  But who can resist WaHo coffee?

It was nice having the gang together again, even if I did feel crummy and couldn't breathe.  There was a lot to catch up on in each others' lives.  A lot of crazy stuff that I unfortunately can't speak about here, but there were good things too.  And of course, enjoying everyone's company was the best part.

perf

Megan is awesome because she let me vent to her even though she needed to vent too.  Mutual venting is a good thing.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

And a bajillion hours later...

I feel like I'm lifting the veil on the writing process today.  Rarely do I post something around the time I actually began writing it.  I get distracted, lose interest, get hungry, or get writer's block.  But I am quite determined to finish this post in the day I started it at the very least.  The beginning would seem disingenuous if I didn't.

I definitely wanted to talk about some music today.  I'm really excited about 3 bands right now.  So for those of you that like darker music, whether shoegazey or industrial or dancey, this is for you!

Alex's (of Thou Shalt Not) newest endeavor, Seeming, is coming out with an album in less than 2 weeks!  As usual, Alex pairs epic vocals with dramatic yet infinitely danceable music while utilizing elements of industrial or classical sound to complement the ambiance on various tracks, all while maintaining thoughtful, intelligent lyrics.  It's beautiful in its variety and timelessness.

You should pre-order this album right now!!!  [link]

I already have my copy on order of course.  ;)  And speaking of new music, I just downloaded everything I could by Black City Lights.  Their song "Offering" was recently featured on Welcome to Nightvale's weather segment.  Normally, I could give or take most of the music they feature.  It's pleasant, but not really my normal taste.  But this just came out of left field and smacked me like a freight train.

Gorgeous shoegazey dark wave with touches of electronica, witch house, and dream pop.  I want to melt into the melancholy.  It's beautiful and perfect and immersive.

Listening to Black City Lights got le boyfriend thinking about another band we had discovered earlier this winter - Winter Severity Index.

A little less shoegazy and a bit more postpunk/gothy influence, Winter Severity Index hails from Italy which makes me love them all the more.  They've captured the sound of the late 80s/early 90s without feeling anachronistic.  They're more of a natural progression from the darkwave/postpunk bands of that era... well, at least the way I would have had things progress if I was in charge of the state of music during the 90s.  They only have an EP on their bandcamp right now but it is AMAZING.  I can't wait for more!

Bonus:  I friggin' love this song

Comic Books and Clothes (beware of spoilers)

So, some good news today!  I woke up yesterday morning to an email that said my Heavy Red re-order had shipped!  And it's due in on Monday!!!  I can't wait for tomorrow now (if only I didn't have to go to work).

I've started reading Saga by Brian K. Vaughn.  So far so good... but there's still a few tropes present that mark it as the work of a male author.  Like we are shown that The Will is a "good guy" (or at least an anti-hero) because despite his negative qualities, he makes it his mission to free a young girl from sexual slavery.  Don't even get me started on Sextillian.  The other thing I'm concerned with is Gwendolyn, though I haven't gotten that far yet.  Visually, she's stunning.  She's quite possibly more beautiful than Alana, or at least on par with her.  But from my understanding of the Moonies (based on Volume 1), I thought they were more animalistic.  At least Marko has goat ears... but all Gwendolyn has are horns - horns which make her look more like a hot succubus than an animal-based alien race.  But I've only seen the one picture of her online since I haven't gotten to her appearance in the comic yet.

The story itself is engaging thus far.  The social commentary on war, religion, politics, and otherness is good, if occasionally strained.  The characters are often a tad more vulgar than I think is needed... regardless of race or gender.  It's as if this universe defaults on a certain level of crassness, which comes off as strange to me.  The only non-vulgar characters so far are background characters.  Shouldn't there be some main characters that are at the other end of the spectrum too?  Perhaps the intention is to showcase the effects of war on the inhabitants' psyches... but my grandfather served in WWII without losing his sense of self or decorum.  In fact, he joined the fight before he was even 18 by lying about his age to the recruiter.  But getting off this tangent- it just seems more like juvenile crassness than war-hardened vulgarity anyway.

This is probably starting to sound like I don't even like the book, huh?  I have a bad tendency of doing this.  I do actually like the book.  I'm admittedly on the fence about some stuff, but that's part of why I'm eager to read Volume 2 and see how things progress.  I really like Hazel and Izabel and Lying Cat. Alana and Marko are strong, interesting leads.  There's good pacing and suspense.  And the author does a good job of getting you attached quickly to characters that expire before the end of the Volume 1.  I really appreciate the way that motherhood in never shown as a detriment to Alana's character.  She remains both mentally and physically strong.  And the baby is portrayed well.  She doesn't get cast into obscurity the way some authors treat children or animals characters.  Nor does she get more attention than she should (no projection of adult characteristics or abilities on her).  The first volume talks about a lot of characters I can't wait to meet.  Everyone from Heist to Even!  Also, and I can't stress this enough, the artwork is absolutely breath-taking.  I adore Fiona Staples' work!

So... getting Volume 2 is my comic book priority at the moment.  I'm actually pretty lackluster about comic books right now due to the ending of Hellblazer and X-Factor.  I'm actually still waiting on the last issue of X-Factor since there seems to have been a mix-up with my pull list or I lost a bag.  Not really sure.  The ending of Hellblazer hurt a lot though.  I'll be brief since I really need to get dinner soon.  I didn't think it was the right ending.  Up til now, Epiphany had been through hell and back to be with John, to prove she was an equal capable of surviving the horrors of his life.  That's why he conceded to marriage.  But in the end, he pulls the trope of "it's too dangerous for you to come with me" and she caves.  Just like that.  BULLSHIT.  While I can see John resorting to this paternalistic "for your own good" savior complex routine, I cannot reconcile Epiphany just fucking bending over for it.  She's too strong of a character to put up with that kind of bullshit from John.  Even the horrors of what she went through surrounding John's death and her seeking solace in John's nephew were in no way anything all that out of the ordinary that would give me reason to believe she'd had a change of heart.  John's death/disappearance isn't enough for many of his adversaries to leave Epiphany alone (take Julian coming after Epiphany as an example) so it's not like she's that much safer on her own.  In fact, hiding out in that little Irish town seems a helluva lot safer than Epiphany staying in the big city and staying on everyone's radar.  Not that I think John would necessarily have the foresight to see this, but Epiphany should have been so perceptive.

Now, if John had left in the middle of the night with nothing but a letter to Epiphany, leaving her no choice in the matter, then I would accept this ending.  (Especially if Epiphany had found a way to secretly follow him and call him out on his bullshit.)  Or if John had reasoned that taking Epiphany with him would have made it easier for his enemies to track him down because everyone knew she was alive, so if she suddenly disappeared it would be suspicious... that I could accept as a reason for them to split up.  But that's not how it's nuanced.  John just wakes up and realizes that keeping Epiphany with him means she'll be caught in the crossfire with his enemies some day in the future.  (Didn't we already get over this shit before the wedding?)  There's never any thought as to how bad shit's going to find him in this tiny Irish town, as the whole purpose of going there was to live out the rest of his days in complete mundanity, never being discovered and avoiding magic at all costs.  You can't just say that it'll suddenly be dangerous if Epiphany tags along unless you explain why (which I think I did a nice job of just a moment ago).  That's asinine!

I mean, I'm sure Epiphany would be bored to death in a place like this, much as John seems to be... but she'd be living out the rest of her days in peace with the man she loves.  Shouldn't she at least have that choice?  Why is she suddenly a coward for whom their love is not strong enough?  I will reiterate that it makes more sense for her either to pursue John, to believe that staying put is protecting John, or for her to never be given a choice at all.  Anything else is character assassination.  I strongly feel that the author took her completely out of character merely to advance the plot and give the book a poetic ending rather than a realistic one based on where the characters' were taking it.  Instead of acknowledging John's growth as a character or the series' growth into new territory, they slaughtered the "newness" whole sale and brought the story back to its roots for an ending that was practically a retcon, leaving Epiphany and fans of the recent changes behind as casualties of war.  As if the end of the series wasn't bittersweet enough, this turned it to simply bitter.

OotD: Love in a Void

This might very well be one of my new favorite coordinates.  It makes me feel like a classy adult and a rockstar all at the same time.  Black on black with metal studs - it just doesn't get much better than that.  The only flaw is that I seem to have forgotten my dangly cross earrings when I took these photos.

Given the nearly monochromatic presentation, the accessories become huge focal points, bringing a touch of brightness with the ombre fade of the scarf and blinged out bag.  Both items are presents from my BFF.  You can find them and other Grace Adele brand accessories at her website: https://angelamarielee.graceadele.us

I'm wearing some of my standards of course - Lucky Brand leather jacket, Forever 21 skinny jeans, and my Strike Envy knock-off sunglasses.  The boots, however, are brand new.  I bought them to replace my favorite black boots which got a hole in them (thank a lot, dirty workplace that destroys all my shoes).  As sexy as these boots are, I'm still not wholly satisfied with them.  I feel like they're too plain and perhaps a little cheap.  They also run a bit big when I'm not wearing my heavy winter socks.  So it looks like I'll still be keeping my eyes out for replacement boots (and then these can become my new work boots).

The netted sweater is my greatest accident of the year.  I ordered Heavy Red's Savage World sweater but received this on accident.  (I'm actually still waiting for them to send me my Savage World sweater and a replacement for my defective Introspection of Love dress... c'mon, guys!  My tracking slip says you got my package on the 21st.  I'm getting a little nervous here!)  The sweater has a high front with a low back and slinks nicely off my shoulder due to the silkiness of the material.  I've been tossing it on over all kinds of shirts and dresses.  It's pretty awesome actually.

Things I wish would disappear from Goth Culture

Why is the whole "corrupt nun" thing so popular?  I'm so sick of seeing it pop up in gothic culture or around Halloween time.  I mean I get it, sort of.  You want to rebel against Christianity.  Profane the Sacred.  Show that what people think is holy is actually infernal.  So cute, so witty, so over it.

Of course it's rarely ever male priests/monks.  It's almost always women.  With big boobs barely covered.  Just another flimsy excuse to objectify women while hiding behind the guise of free-thinking, satirical intellectual.
